Alrighty, lets get this clear to start with.. The difference between a Photographer/Photography and a Videographer/Videography.
If you use google:
Photographer: a person who takes photographs, especially as a job.
Photography: the art or practice of taking and processing photographs.
Videographer: a person who makes video films.
Videography: the process or art of making video films
We know this sounds obvious but it is honestly something that gets confused often! Basically, a videographer films your event and creates a film for you whilst a photographer takes photos of your day and you receive prints (or digital format).
Now we know the difference, which one to choose? Personally we cannot go past an album of images - or the fancy new magazine style booklets, which you can send to your family or hang them in your house, or even post on instagram. But in saying this, times are changing and videos can be so much more effective when it comes to promotion, social media or even reminiscing on the feeling, emotion and excitement of the day!
Regardless of which one you choose - we have some things to think about when making your selection and to assist you with your day!
Image Quality/Style
Whether it be the instagram, website or a friends photos/videos from the photographer/videographer - the quality should be consistent and the style be what you like. Professionals are this for a reason although when it comes to art and creatives, they normally specialise in certain styles. If you love the glowing effect to your images, there would be no point choosing someone who specialises in raw and unfiltered imagery. Can't tell the difference? See a slight example below:
It's almost like anything creative, everyone has their own personal preference and skill - be sure to choose someone who showcases the photography you like!
Location
We see this happen many many times. You have your heart set on a photographer who mainly has images of outdoor hinterland and beach shots yet your day is mostly spent inside a church or venue - chances are the photos you are dreaming of won't turn into a reality. There are so many varients when it comes to indoor and outdoor photography!
Communication/vibe
Communication is key! It may not be something you initially think about but be sure to make a time to meet your photographer/videographer to talk about what you are looking for. If you don't feel comfortable with the person you're speaking with, or maybe you don't quite think they are getting where you are going with your vision, they probably aren't the person for you. During your day, the photographer and videographer will most likely be with you during getting ready, at the ceremony, during photographs along with the reception - this is a fair bit of time to spend with someone/group of people - make sure you get along and feel comfortable because this is where the best photos and video footage will come from.
List of images
Before your big day, go for a drive around the are and think of places you may want to get photos. Another way is to type the location into instagram and search for images other brides have had taken! Get some inspiration for yourself and your photographer/videographer
Development time
Depending on your photographer or videographer - be sure to prepare to wait for up to 6 weeks for your images! We cannot stress enough that whilst every other vendor prepares for the day and is finished by the end of the evening (or day after for those packing down) - your photographer/videographer has just spent the entire day working and now has to go through the thousands of images, select their favourites along with editing and correcting. This can take anywhere from 10mins - 2 hours per image. We are not exaggerating! Our biggest hot tip is to be patient and maybe just ask your professional for a few preview images if possible. This way you can see an example of how they may look along with being able to share a snippet.
We know there are SO MANY other tips and hints we could suggest but these are a few key elements.
